World War 1 posters
During the early part of the 20th century propaganda played a vital part in winning the hearts and minds of the common man. Propaganda came inmany forms, there were the fiery political speeches, the movies, the radio broadcaster and of course most commonly of all the propaganda poster. Although these posters were often used to encourage young men and women to go to war or to convince a conscript to join one side or the other one cannot ignore the fact that they are a poignant reminder of times past as well as often being a brilliant piece of art. This website is dedicated to the posters of the WW1 these website have propaganda posters from the Spanish Civil War and Second World War.
Propaganda played a massive role in the First World War.The uses of the posters vary, in Canada they were often used to encourage citizens to keep working as there were economic opportunities for the country because of the war.In England they were used to encourage young men and women and to sign up and fight for "King and country".Other uses included the encouraging to buy war bonds and to save fiood rations.
Whatever the use of these posters maybe they serve as a reminder of a War that devasted Europe and which causes are still unclear. World war 1 has often been referred to as the Great War due to its size and impact. In my opinion this name is derserved. The First World War began on June 28th 1914 when Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated by a Yugoslav nationalist. This triggered a bloody and brutal war that was to cost 9 million lives. The scale of the war was due to the various imperialistic alliances that were in place at the time. This resulted in the war spreading throughout the world. It was the first major war to have aircraft involvement and also known for the horrible conditions in the wars trenches.
